How to make a Template

Making a template of a cover

To start, take the overall measurements of the cover itself; you will need the widest length and width. Use these measurements to ensure that the material you choose for your template is large enough to accommodate the cover.

Next, select the material for your template. Working on a flat surface, lay the cover out on top of the template material. Straighten the cover and smooth out any creases without stretching it.

Using a pencil or chalk, carefully draw around the shape of the cover, keeping as close to the seam edge as possible. Whilst doing this, avoid shifting the cover out of position, as any movement will affect the shape.

After you have completed the outline of the cover, remove it and double-check that the overall measurements of the template match the original measurements you took, and that the shape is identical to the cover.

Mark the location of the zip on the template. Once you are satisfied with your template, use a sharp pair of scissors to cut along the drawn outline.

Making a template of a space

Start by taking the overall measurements of the area you would like to template. Take note of the maximum length and width. Use these measurements to ensure that the material you choose for the template is larger than the designated space.

Select a suitable material for your template. For large areas, such as bench or window seats, we recommend using sheets of newspaper, as they can be stuck together to create a larger template if needed.

Once you have your template material, lay it evenly across the area. Fold any excess material inward and press it down into the edges to create creases that outline the shape of the space.

Carefully remove the template material, and then, working on a flat surface, use a pencil or chalk to draw along the creases.

Next, use a sharp pair of scissors to cut out the template along the marked lines. Once you have done this, place the template back in the area to check the fit, making any necessary adjustments to ensure that it fits the space correctly.
